The scales of Nadanamakriya are as follows :
Aarohanam (Ascending) : S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3
Avarohanam (Descending) : N3 D1 P M1 G3 R1 S N3
Nadanamakriya is a janya raga, derived from Mayamalavagowla (below), 15th on the Melakarta scale.
It is a Nishandantya Raga ie. the highest note sung is the Nishadam (N3). This leaves me with a questioning kind of feeling, a certain yearning. This mood is enhanced by songs sung in a very slow tempo and where the lyrics are contemplative and meditative. In the category comes songs like Arar Asaipadar by Muthu Thandavar and the padam Paiyyada by Kshetranagar. Other songs I like are Bhajasva Sri by Oothukadu Venkata Subbaiyer, Jagadeesha by Swati Thirunal and Karuna Jalade by Tyagaraja.
Note : The 12 notes in the octave are named as below. Please note that C is used as Sa for the sake of simplicity as the scale is relative in Carnatic Music. Also note that the scales paint only a superficial picture of the raga as the gamakas(ornamentations) are a very important part of a raga.
Dear Suja
Sooryagayathri yesterday performed for Datta yoga centre at Forest hill college , Melbourne. She sang the Bhadrachala Ramadas krithi ye theragu nannu Daya choodeva in nadanamakriya..
A soulful rendition .. one just got immersed with the divine
Was googling to read about the raagam and saw this post of yours .. yes it’s meditative

Hi Padma, I didn’t even know that Sooryagayathri was coming here! I’ve seen a number of her youtube videos and would have been interested to listening to her in person. But Mondays are baby sitting days for me, I couldn’t have made it to the concert anyway. Thanks for the video. I do love Nadanamakriya, it is so very soothing…
